Prairie-Style Architecture and Landscape

St. Mary's Point, Minnesota
MNLA Honor Award, Residential Full Yard Design, MASLA Merit Award, Private Landscape Design

The award winning landscape embraces sustainable design principles that govern the landscape design from the concept plan to the detail planting. The clients desired a “naturalized” landscape to blend with the prairie style home.

Prairie takes precedence over most of the five acre site, with organized planting matrix of Little Bluestem and prairie forbs in planting beds adjacent to the home. The intentional planting pattern of those beds are representative of the ratio of grasses to prairie flowers in a native short grass prairie and blend with the seeded prairie in the landscape beyond. A minimal lawn area, designed as a graceful, curvilinear form, contrasts with the textures and height of the prairie grass. Rainwater infiltration basins intercept the rainwater from the downspouts off the rooftop to help minimize maintenance.
